The Bluetooth® 5.0 enables a higher symbol rate of 2 Mbps via the high-speed LE 2M PHY with significantly longer range possible using the LE coded PHY at 500 kb/s or 125 kb/s. In addition, new LE advertising extensions allow for much larger amounts of data to be broadcasted in connectionless scenarios. The PAN1780 also supports Type 2 Near Field Communication (NFC-A) for use in simplified pairing and payment solutions (external antenna required).

AEC-Q200 qualified passives have been designed for automotive electronics applications where reliability and stability are required in challenging conditions of high temperature, temperature changes, pressure resistance, humidity and mechanical stress.

The Grid-EYE evaluation kit combines Panasonic’s industry leading Grid-EYE sensor, its “nanopower” PAN1740 Bluetooth Smart Module and a microcontroller on one PCB, enabling engineers to design and develop wireless sensor prototypes quickly. 24 August 2015, element14 has announced it is the first to stock the Panasonic Motion Sensor AMA and AMB Series for human detection.

Priced from £12.78 with price breaks for higher volumes and next day delivery available, the ‘plug and play’ sensors provide trigonometric background suppression, which means they are unaffected by changing scenes or by people passing by outside the detection range.

Applications include the detection of the presence of an individual in front of machines, at automatic doors or in security gates and as non-contact switches for hygiene and medical applications.

Changing light conditions and bright daylight measuring up to 30k lux at the sensor’s surface will not affect the performance of the sensor.

Measuring 10mm wide and 20mm high, the package depth has been reduced to 12.7mm ensuring a low product footprint and easier installation.

For adjacent use there is a version with external trigger input.  The timing of the signals can be adjusted so that the beam frequency of each adjacent sensor will not interfere with the other.

The proximity switches have a detection distance of 5 to 200cm with NPN and PNP transistor outputs.

Farnell element14 is today introducing the Panasonic PAN1740 next-generation Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Module enabling low-energy wireless connectivity.

With demand for this type of connectivity accelerating in recent times, the BLE offers a reduced form factor, significantly lower power consumption and embedded Software Stack.

This Singlemode Bluetooth Smart System-on-Chip module is optimised for low power, small size and low system cost products, making it ideal for smart watches, fitness trackers, smartphone accessories, medical monitors (such as heart rate monitors and glucose meters) and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The BLE achieves its low power consumption primarily by keeping its radio turned off for a large proportion of time.  BLE also sets up connections very quickly, which further minimises the radio’s on-time.  BLE can transmit authenticated data in as little as 3ms, versus the 1000ms typical for Bluetooth Classic.

Priced from £11.82, and available with price breaks for higher quantities, the PAN1740 comes in a very small 9.0 x 9.5 x 1.8 mm SMD package with shielded case and chip antenna and reduces the external component count and development effort.  Its industrial temperature ranges from -40°C to 85°C.

The tiny power consumption of just 4.9mA in Tx and Rx mode makes the use of coin cell batteries viable or reduces the needed battery capacity and cost of existing solution by at least 50%. It meets Bluetooth 4.0 standard, while FCC, IC and CE approvals are under preparation.

The module comes with a complete software development platform, including a qualified Bluetooth Smart single-mode stack to be programmed on-chip. Bluetooth Smart profiles for consumer wellness, sport, fitness, security and proximity applications are supplied as standard, while the facilities are present to develop additional customer profiles as needed. 

5 January 2015, Farnell element14 has announced the new Panasonic NFC Tag ICs and evaluation boards with built in FeRAM and AES-128 encryption

Panasonic’s new NFC Tags provide a number of value added connectivity features including high security, high speed Near Field Communication and data storage, high radiation resistance using 4kbit Non-Volatile FeRAM Technology and have ultra low power consumption.

The products are compliant with NFC forum standards and support ISO/IEC14443 TypeB & FeliCa RF Interfaces.

The Tags and evaluation boards support a wide variety of applications including Internet of Things, energy harvesting (battery-less operation possible), latest consumer electronics such as wearable devices and audio/visual, home appliances and devices in industrial, medical and healthcare environments.

Farnell element14 was formally recognised by Panasonic for its number one customer base for Panasonic Push Products in 2014 at electronica in November.  The award recognised NPI commitment and return to sales growth in Europe in 2014.
