Premier Farnell, the Development Distributor, has released new insights from its global user survey into the market for the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, revealing why and how both professionals and makers use the Raspberry Pi.

The research highlights the widespread use of the Raspberry Pi by professional engineers in prototyping and proof-of-concept applications, particularly for IoT, industrial automation and control applications as well as its popularity with makers. It also provides valuable insights into the high proportion of users that take advantage of the Raspberry Pi add-on HAT devices, which open up a myriad of new applications without the need to develop custom hardware.

Some key insights from the Raspberry Pi survey include:

• One third of respondents confirmed that they are using Raspberry Pi for personal projects and more than one third of the engineers are using the Raspberry Pi for proof of concept and prototyping. Other uses include Test rigs/testing systems and production.
• 34% of makers are using Raspberry Pi exclusively in their personal projects.
• Makers said that the main reason they use Raspberry Pi is because of its price, closely followed by the performance and familiarity with the product. Professional engineers care about ease of use more than any other factor when deciding to use the Raspberry Pi.
• Makers declared the Pi camera and touchscreen their favourite accessories.
• Professional engineers are primarily using the Raspberry Pi for Internet of Things applications closely followed by Industrial Automation & Control. Other notable applications include robotics, display and consumer applications.

Premier Farnell, the Development Distributor, introduces the exclusive Avnet SmartEdge Industrial IoT Gateway; a new low-cost industrial gateway powered by Raspberry Pi. The Avnet SmartEdge Industrial Gateway will be showcased at Embedded World, Nuremberg, Germany from 26-28 February 2019 on stand 1-370.

The Avnet SmartEdge Industrial IoT Gateway enables seamless and secure connectivity to the cloud through Avnet’s IoT Connect platform running on Microsoft Azure, and is ideal for developing industrial automation applications such as, remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, process control and automation.

The gateway addresses key requirements for customers across a wide range of industrial applications – including additional ports to handle industrial protocols and a trusted computing module for added security on the hardware.

The device also has the 40-pin expansion header to link with a range of devices from the ecosystem of HATs and other accessories.

The enclosure features space for an additional internal accessory to provide Zigbee, Z-Wave, or LoRa communications capabilities, for example, or for multiple accessories through case expansion. Mounting options include DIN rail, wall or free-standing.

element14.com, the world’s largest electronic design community, has launched the ‘Pi-Casso’ Design Challenge, encouraging its community to think outside the frame and create digital artwork that showcases the versatility of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. This latest design challenge from Premier Farnell underscores the Development Distributor’s commitment to push its community to create groundbreaking designs that surpass conventional thinking of what electronics projects can be.

“The world’s most famous artists from Van Gogh to Picasso broke barriers and created artwork that made a profound impact on the world, and our community members are creating groundbreaking designs every day that impact the world around them too,” said Dianne Kibbey, Global Head of Community and Social Media for the element14 Community. “With a focus on electronic designs and a product as versatile as Raspberry Pi as the centerpiece for this challenge, there’s no limit to what our community can accomplish.”

Designers can apply to participate in Pi-Casso through February 28 by submitting their proposal online. On March 8, up to 15 challengers will be notified and given the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, a Piface Digital 2, and a Raspberry Pi Camera V2 to build their design, but will only be required to use Raspberry Pi in their design. The challengers will have about 15 weeks to build their projects, and develop 10 blog posts sharing their progress with the element14 Community. Entries will be judged by a panel of judges from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the element 14 Community and others on originality, innovation and technical merit. Winners will be announced in early June.

First prize winners will receive a MJI Mavic 2 Pro Videography Drone, second place winners will receive a Nikon D3500 DSLR, along with lenses and a lighting kit, and design challenge finishers will receive a Raspberry Pi Arcade Kit to help turn their Raspberry Pi into a miniature arcade cabinet.

The event will take place at Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Montani in Fermo and will focus on professional and industrial applications of the Raspberry Pi single-board computer and the Compute Module board, specifically designed for industrial applications.

Hosted in the historic Museo dell'Innovazione e della Tecnica Industriale (MITI) from ITT Montani, the event is organised with the support of the Raspberry PI Foundation and Tektronix, leader in the Test Measurement business.

Expert engineers from Farnell element14 customers will give presentations and demos of real design solutions based on Raspberry Pi in different sectors: 3P engineering, will showcase their Raspberry PI based solutions for health and industry, Aeridani, will introduce a demo board for general purpose and EST Engineering, will give an overview on their smart home solution for the kitchen.

The event will also include a presentation by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. There will be Raspberry Pi demos and accessories on display, and the opportunity to talk to experts about bespoke services from Farnell element14.

The day will end with a specific focus on solutions for education. ITT Montani will show their low-cost and easy to implement solution for the electronic registry. The school is dedicated to developing highly skilled students in electronics through innovative programme and scholarships. This year Farnell element14 partnered with ITT Montani supplying 30 Raspberry PI Kits to equip a laboratory as part of their electronics class. The half-day event, which was organised with the support of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, was held in Stuttgart-Böblingen on the 13th June 2018, and featured presentations from customers who have developed Raspberry Pi based solutions in different sectors.

As one of five challenges that the element14 community runs each year, and the largest, 18 community members were tasked with using the Raspberry Pi development board as the main ingredient to advance the world of food through kitchen safety, food sustainability, or the creation of new preparation methods.

Projects should show how the Raspberry Pi can be used to advance the world of food, whether it is through kitchen safety, food sustainability, or the creation of new preparation methods. Potential entries could include an intelligent kitchen scale, a commercial-grade ripening container, or even a Fridge2Sofa IoT Beer delivery system.

element14 will accept applications for the ‘Pi Chef’ Design Challenge until 1^st December 2017. Fifteen official challengers will be announced on 15^th December and will receive a complimentary kit containing the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, 8MP Raspberry Pi Camera, Raspberry Pi Sense HAT, NXP Explore NFC Expansion board, 2.4” Touch Screen HAT, and Piface Digital 2. Each of the 15 challengers will provide weekly updates on their progress through blog posts, photos, and videos via the element14 Community.

Challengers will have until 2^nd March 2018 to submit their projects. Entries will be judged on originality, innovation, and technical merit by a panel of judges including experts from Raspberry Pi and element14. The winners will be announced in March 2018.

The grand prize winner will receive a Brevill Barista Espresso Machine and a $1,500 USD Newark element14 cart. The runner-up prize is a Whynter Ice-Cream Maker and a $750 USD Newark element14 cart. The third-place prize is a Breville Tea Maker and a $500 USD Newark element14 cart. All challengers who complete their projects, use the Raspberry Pi, post 10+ updates in the Pi Chef space, and adhere to the requirements in the Terms and Conditions will receive a Tenma prize pack.

27 October 2015, element14 has signed a global exclusive agreement with Raspberry Pi Trading to provide design and manufacturing services to OEM customers to create bespoke designs based upon the Raspberry Pi technology platform.

This announcement follows a number of customer requests to create customised versions of the Raspberry Pi boards and represents the next phase in the element14 and Raspberry Pi global partnership. Utilising the proven in house design expertise available through its Embest and AVID technology businesses, together with the comprehensive training provided by Broadcom and Raspberry Pi Trading, element14 has access to over 200 design engineers to evaluate customers’ needs and provide bespoke Raspberry Pi based customization designs to meet their requirements.

The agreement opens up the potential for the Raspberry Pi technology platform to be customised to suit specific customer applications across a wide range of industries and sectors from Internet of Things (IoT) technology to energy management, industrial and end consumer devices.  Taking the existing advantages of the Raspberry Pi, such as ease of programming and ability to interact with and control physical devices, it’s easy to envisage how changes to the Raspberry Pi hardware will enable it to be designed in to applications on a commercial scale.

Customisations may include reconfiguring the board layout, incorporating additional functionality, redesigning the interfaces, and changing the board and memory configuration.  As these will be bespoke designs it is envisaged that order quantities will start in the region of between 3,000 and 5,000 depending upon the nature of the customisation.
